Road work sucks, but at least they’re (ostensibly) doing something that needs doing and eventually it will be done, right? Apparently not.
There’s a road on my way to work. It’s the shorter, faster route, and it’s a fun little mountain pass. Unfortunately they’re repaving it, so I only take it every once in a while. Sometimes you get lucky and there’s no one there, other times you get 2 or 3 “Stop for 15 minutes to let 2 cars go by 5 minutes apart” zones.
But the repaved sections were nice, and once they painted the center stripes on I figured they were done.
APPARENTLY NOT, BECAUSE THEY’RE FUCKING REPAVING THE REPAVING.
THE SAME STRETCH OF ROAD THEY JUST REPAVED, THEY’RE PAVING OVER AGAIN, PAINT AND ALL.
My brother and I have been trying to figure out why. Our best guess is they were contracted to work on that road for X weeks, and by god, they’re going to spend X weeks working on that road! Getting things done ahead of schedule and under budget is how you get shorter schedules and smaller budgets, after all!
It wouldn’t even be so bad if the flaggers were even semi-competent. Maybe if there’s a line of cars a 1/4 mile long in one direction, and only a car or two every couple minutes in the other, just go ahead and let the backed up direction go?
I’ve always been under the impression that road work was more due to a construction company having a friend in city hall than to any real need, but this goes beyond even my cynical suspicions.

If flaggers were competent, they wouldn’t be stuck doing the flagging.

The thing is, it’s a separate company here. An entire company that does nothing BUT flagging. You’d think they’d manage some competency.

True story:
This morning I followed a detour south because the next road to the west has been closed for awhile for repaving.
The road I was going south on ended at a road closed sign across the intersection.
The road I turned back west on had signs stating the next road ahead was closed.
HOW IS THE DETOUR CLOSED AS WELL???
Turns out the section of other closed road was done being paved, just not lined, and was open. As I proceeded south on that road, the next east-west road I passed was closed too.
And then I died.

True story: My home town repaved a road along the main drag. Small town. They did such a shitty job that now there is a sign that says rough road because it is rutted so bad. Now they don’t have enough money to fix it again. Every time I drive past the sign I was to spray paint “Then fucking fix it.” over top.
